How to Cancel Amazon Prime (and Get a Prorated Refund)
Amazon Prime is $14.99/month or $139/year. After a 2023 FTC lawsuit, Amazon was forced to shorten the cancellation flow to 3 clicks - 'Iliad Flow' is officially dead. Here's the current playbook plus the prorated refund Amazon owes annual subscribers (but rarely volunteers).
The bundled add-on trap
Cancelling Prime does NOT cancel Prime Video Channels (HBO, Showtime, Starz add-ons), Audible Premium Plus, Amazon Music Unlimited, or Kindle Unlimited - those are separate subscriptions billed through your Amazon account. After cancelling Prime, audit Your Memberships and Subscriptions to find every active add-on, or you'll keep paying for Channels you can't even watch (most require active Prime).
Step-by-step: cancel Amazon Prime
- 1
Sign in at amazon.com → hover 'Account & Lists' → 'Your Prime Membership'
On mobile: Amazon app → Account (person icon) → 'Manage Prime Membership'. The web flow is faster post-FTC ruling.
- 2
Click 'Manage Membership' → 'End Membership'
Amazon shows benefits you'll lose. Click 'Continue to Cancel' (decline the 'Pause for 3 months' offer - it auto-resumes at full price).
- 3
Click 'Continue to Cancel' → 'Cancel Membership'
Three clicks total, per the FTC consent order. If Amazon tries to add more steps, screenshot the flow - the FTC actively monitors compliance and accepts complaints at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- 4
For annual plans, request a prorated refund
Amazon's policy: you get a FULL refund if you haven't used Prime benefits in the current period, OR a prorated refund based on benefits used. Most annual members qualify for at least partial refund. Click 'Yes, end my membership' then immediately click 'Request Refund' on the confirmation page.
- 5
Cancel any active add-ons
Go to Your Memberships and Subscriptions (amazon.com/yourmembershipsandsubscriptions). Cancel Prime Video Channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.), Audible, Amazon Music, Kindle Unlimited - each is billed separately and survives Prime cancellation.
If Amazon refuses your prorated refund
Chat with Amazon Customer Service
amazon.com/contactus → Chat. Cite the 'Amazon Prime Refund Policy' (Conditions of Use → Prime Terms). Amazon refunds annual plans in ~75% of first-contact requests when you reference benefits not used since the latest annual renewal.
Chargeback through your bank
Charges appear as 'AMZN MKTP' or 'Prime Video Channels'. File a Reg E dispute. Annual Prime is uniquely refundable per Amazon's own terms - this is one of the strongest chargeback cases for any streaming service.
File an FTC complaint
reportfraud.ftc.gov. If Amazon added friction to the cancel flow (more than 3 clicks, surprise screens, missing 'Cancel' button), the FTC's 2023 consent order is on your side. Past complaints have triggered direct refunds.
Send LeakGuard's Amazon Prime demand letter
Pre-filled with your Amazon account email, the annual prorated-refund argument, FTC Negative Option Rule, ROSCA, and (if applicable) FTC consent order citation. CCs your card issuer.
Step-by-step cancellation letter
Copy this and send to Amazon Prime support. Fill in the bracketed fields, keep the FTC and ROSCA citations intact - that wording is what gets a refund processed instead of a retention pitch.
- 1. Replace every
[bracket]with your real info. - 2. Send from the email tied to your Amazon Prime account.
- 3. BCC yourself so you have a timestamped copy for any chargeback.
- 4. If no reply in 5 business days, forward the same email to your card issuer's dispute team.
Subject: Immediate Cancellation Request - Amazon Prime Account Date: June 15, 2026 To: Amazon Prime Billing & Retention Team From: [Your full name] Account email: [email on file] Last 4 of payment card: [XXXX] 1. Notice of cancellation I am writing to terminate my Amazon Prime subscription effective immediately. Treat this email as my written cancellation notice. Do not place the account into a pause, downgrade, or "win-back" state - close it. 2. Stop all future charges Remove my payment method from file and confirm in writing that no further charges (recurring, prorated, or "reactivation") will be authorized against my card. Per the FTC Negative Option Rule and ROSCA (15 U.S.C. § 8403), continued billing after a clear cancellation request is unlawful. 3. Refund of post-cancellation charges If any charge has posted to my card after the date of this notice, refund it in full to the original payment method within 5 business days. I am also requesting a courtesy refund for the most recent billing cycle on the grounds that the service was not materially used. 4. Written confirmation required Reply to this email with: (a) the cancellation confirmation number, (b) the final access date, and (c) confirmation that my payment method has been removed. 5. Escalation If I do not receive written confirmation within 5 business days, I will (i) file a Reg E billing dispute with my card issuer, (ii) submit a complaint to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and (iii) file with my state Attorney General's consumer-protection division under applicable UDAP statutes. Thank you for handling this promptly. [Your full name] [Your phone number] cc: Card issuer fraud / billing-disputes department

Can I really get a prorated refund on an annual Prime membership?+
Yes - this is the most underused Prime cancellation trick. Amazon's official Prime Terms grant a full refund if you haven't used benefits since the latest renewal, OR a prorated refund based on usage. Most people accept the default 'access until renewal, no refund' because Amazon doesn't surface the refund option proactively. Always ask explicitly.
Does cancelling Prime cancel Prime Video Channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.)?+
No - Channels are separate subscriptions billed monthly through your Amazon account. Cancelling Prime stops the Prime benefits (free shipping, basic Prime Video) but Channels continue billing - which is a particularly painful trap because most Channels REQUIRE active Prime to play, so you'd be paying for content you can't watch.
Why is Amazon's cancellation flow so much shorter now?+
In June 2023 the FTC sued Amazon over the 'Iliad Flow' - a deliberately complex 6-page cancellation maze. In a 2025 consent order, Amazon agreed to a 3-click cancel flow with no dark patterns. If you see a flow longer than 3 clicks today, screenshot it and report to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Does cancelling Prime delete my Amazon account?+
No - Prime and your Amazon account are completely separate. Cancelling Prime removes Prime benefits (shipping, video) but your purchase history, addresses, payment methods, wish lists, and reviews remain. To delete the entire Amazon account, go to amazon.com/help → Login & security → Close Your Amazon Account.
Will LeakGuard cancel Amazon Prime for me?+
LeakGuard Pro's Cancellation Engine drafts a one-tap demand letter for the case where Amazon refused a prorated annual refund OR charged you after cancellation OR added friction to the cancel flow in violation of the FTC consent order. For an active cancellation, the 3-click web flow is fastest; the engine is built for refund extraction and FTC-violation disputes.
